Job Description:
This position is located at Community Memorial Hospital in South
Hill, VirginiaFounded in 1970, the Department of Family Medicine
and Population Health at VCU has a long and proud history of
training medical students and resident physicians. Our Department
houses all of our family medicine medical student education
programs, including a highly rated clerkship and two longitudinal,
four-year track programs: The Inner City International Rural
Program (I2CRP) is a 4-year longitudinal program for medical
students who are invested in serving medically underserved
populations. The mission of the program is to increase the number
of students who choose career paths in primary care and who
practice in underserved settings. The program enrolls up to 24
students per cohort or approximately 96 students during the M1 - M4
years. The preclinical curriculum includes didactics, journal
clubs, grand rounds presentations, and service roles in underserved
settings. The clinical curriculum includes second-year
preceptorships in urban and rural underserved settings and
clerkship rotations in urban, rural, and international underserved
settings in Family Medicine, general Pediatrics, Ambulatory
Medicine, and general Surgery. Students also complete a scholarly
capstone project that is relevant to medically underserved
communities.As a founding core faculty member and the Program
Director, you will be responsible for helping to build this program
from the ground up! We anticipate having residents in post no later
than July 1, 2025. Prior to that time, the Program Director will be
responsible for working with the Associate Program Director to
design curriculum, prepare and execute the ACGME application, help
conduct initial recruiting for clinical faculty and residents;
while maintaining time for independent clinical practice and
scholarship. As Program Director and Core Faculty, once the
residents arrive, we anticipate faculty will spend a majority of
time on clinical precepting, direct resident and medical student
education in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, and
educational administration. The remaining time will be devoted to
your own direct clinical practice. This position will be primarily
based at VCU's Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, VA; while
the Associate Program Director is located primarily on the
MCVCampus of VCU Health in Richmond, VA.Responsibilities
include:
- Demonstrates dedication to Family Medicine Education
- Responsible for monitoring the faculty appointments,
assignments, outcomes, and proper conduct of educational
activities
- Responsible for the supervision, direction, evaluation, and
administration of the Family Medicine Education
ProgramResponsibilities for the Family Medicine Program include:
- Provide direction and leadership necessary to obtain and/or
maintain the Family Medicine Residency Program with Full Residency
Review Committee Accreditation
- Conduct ongoing review of the residency program as required by
RRC and ACGME
- Participate with the Department Chair and other Residency
Leadership in recruiting and making recommendations for improvement
in the educational programs within the Department of Family
Medicine and Population Health and within the entire VCU Health
systems
- Assure that services are performed in accordance with and
sufficient for compliance with the requirements of all required
accrediting bodies such as the Accreditation Council for Graduate
Medical Education, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the
System's liability carrier
- Continual improvement of the Family Medicine Residency Program
with a full accreditation by the ACGME
- Serve as a member of VCU Health's Graduate Medical Education
Council
- Perform such duties as are appropriate and necessary to the
position and operation of the VCU Health Systems and the Family
Medicine Residency Program
- Recruit, retain, and promote high caliber, diverse residents
who exhibit interest and commitment to rural healthcare, health
equity, excellence in patient care and medical education, high
ethics, and a commitment to a high order of professionalism
- Participate in the budgeting process for the residency
program
- Review clinical teaching and scholarship of each faculty member
individually and annually.Required Qualifications:
- Able to obtain license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth
of Virginia
- Shall have completed an accredited residency program in Family
Medicine
- Shall be certified and recertified by the American Board of
Family Medicine
- Five or more years of Family Medicine Practice
- Three to five years of experience as faculty in a Family
Medicine Residency Training Program
- Past experience in providing direct patient care to underserved
populations across multiple settings
- Willing and able to care for patients in both the inpatient and
outpatient setting
- Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and
inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff
member at VCUPreferred Qualifications:
- Past experience in providing direct patient care and/or
residency training in rural settings
- Direct experience in the medical education of a diversity of
learners such as medical students, interprofessional learners,
etc.
- Recent scholarly activity such as peer-reviewed funding,
publication of original research or review articles in
peer-reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks, publication or
presentation of clinical series or case reports at scientific
society meetings, or participation in national committees or
educational organizations
- Confidence and willingness to be a faculty lead in one or more
of the following:
- Care of pregnant women including antenatal, labor and delivery,
and postpartum care
- Care of children in the inpatient setting
- Substance abuse treatment to include medically-assisted
therapy
- Primary care Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and/or
specialized procedural training in emergency, inpatient and
outpatient settingsThis position will be open until filled.Position
